Toulouse Lautrec & Jules Cheret

Toulouse Lautrec is a post impressionist painter and printmaker, he was commissioned to produce a series of posters for the moulin rogue cabaret in 1891. This gave birth to one of the most popular images in history, showing some gentlemen watching a woman dance. Since then the image has become an icon in the poster scene and extremely famous worldwide, some looked down on Lautrec as he produced this as it was seen as 'beneath him' at the time, as he was predominantly a talented painter dealing with alcohol problems, which led him to indulge in drink and prostitution.

Jules Cheret is a french painter and lithographer, who become known as the father of the modern poster. This is due to Cheret advancing the lithography printing process by developing the successful 3 stone printing technique. His artwork shows many beautiful french women dancing, wearing fancy dresses and enjoying life. His artwork became empowering for the french women of the late 1800s and early 1900s.
