500 Word Critical Report

Image
Throughout this module I have really taken my poster design skills to the next level, I may not have looked into the research and histories of posters as much as I would have liked to or analyse pre existing posters. But I have been more focused on the production side of testing and trying out many different methods and approaches to crafting a poster. I reflect upon the posters I have made so far and the absolute most successful are the Blair witch screen print, The Last Of Us mixed media and The Town That Dreaded Sundown mixed media also. With these posters I really put my knowledge of what elements and factors I can manipulate in crafting the perfect image. The use of text are very unique in each one, wether its reserved like the last of us, or jagged and intimidating like Blair Witch they are all successful in their own way. The Text used in the dreaded sundown poster is a bit more special, the design and placement of the type was really interwoven into the foun...

Blair Witch Poster Prints

Image
Here are some shots of a few different prints that I made. Overall I really Like this print, the text to image is so well interlaced into each other, and is very clear to read which is a key skill I have been developing consistently throughout this module. The black grain along the page gives a very nice low tech feel to the overall image, the jagged typeface does a good job of cutting into the page space.

Blair Witch Screen Developments

Here are the screen layers for the Blair witch prints, I plan to print the text in a blood red and the stick layer in a blood red.

Blair Witch Poster development

Here are the stick effigies I tied together using sticks from out and about Worcester, using twine to fit in with the low budget naturalistic theme. Here are the shots of the effigy that I used a threshold filter over the top on to create the screen layers, it gives a nice stippled black dotted layer that sits upon the page.

Blair Witch Project Thumbnail and Sketchbook Work

Image
Blair Witch Project is one of my favourite indie horror films, I really admire the low tech cinematography and the media type of filming really reflects well on the subject of found footage. I focused a lot on the stick effigy used in the film, it's an immediately recognisable icon from the film and has quite a striking look to it. These thumbnails are all toward a screen print poster

The Last Of Us Poster

Image
The Last Of Us Poster Final I adorned the top of the head with flowers, almost to jux ta pose beauty with the creepiness of the face, using pure line was a great choice in showing nasty details, colouring the areas individually helps show a clear communication of the image. The Text used for the title may look a little basic but I thought i'd approach this with a calm and professional typeface that shows beauty in the madness of the image. It was originally one long line, but after review, decided it was better to cut into two lines.

The Last Of Us Clicker drawing

Image
Printing off the strongest thumbnail that I drew, I used a light box and a pen to produce a strong purely line drawing interpretation of a clicker, communicating all of the gorey little details, scratches, growths and marks that I could with just line. Nailing the break in the gums was imperative in creating a shocking look in the face, at is the most disturbing factor of the face before the fungal growths actually on the head.

The Last Of Us sketchbook Thumbnails

The Last Of Us TLOU is actually a survival horror video game, a big fan of the game I decided to create a poster that pays respect to game using the skills of poster design I have developed in the module so far. I started with some basic brainstorming of the main enemies, using their horrible fungal face as the main attraction of the poster. However Andy provided me with some valuable feedback that, it would be better to do a face shot that cuts off just as it starts getting into the Knitty gritty of the face. Its almost as if your spoiling the surprise and leave them wanting more.

The Town That Dreaded Sundown Final Re-work

Image
The Town That Dreaded Sundown Re Worked This rendition of the poster is much more successful in its aim of creating an unsettling image for the movie, the text looming out from the town works much better than it did before. The figure of the killer in a subtle fade creates a very chilling image. I also removed the hilt of his knife and the size of the blade as it was looking more like a sword before hand.

The Town That Dreaded Sundown First try

Image
Here is my poster for the town that dreaded sundown I like the actual design of the text, but as for it standing out as it crosses over the villians body works better in theory than in practice. The subtle scratched background works well contrasting with the bright red of the front layer. After receiving feedback from Andy we decided to re work this piece with a different idea, actually having a shot of the towns skyline and have him loom against sundown. The actual text itself wont change but it will shadow out from the town.

The Town That Dreaded Sundown

Image
Here are some rough thumbnails and text development for the town that dreaded sundown (tttds). I want to create something that has a very low tech and scratched feel to it, the low tech vibe from my previous screen prints worked well so I want to emulate this in my further posters. I explored a lot of different visual ideas and tried many different approaches to this poster.

V/H/S Screen Print 2

Image
I started making the layers by blowing up my thumbnail into A3 by printing it on to 2 A4 sheets sideways. Using this as a base I made two different layers for the screen print, the main line art layer and the red bloody detail layer. Using these layers combined into a print creates a very crazy looking and unsettling character. The contrast of the black VHS tapes against the red of the split head, as well as the red detailing surrounding the head and shoulders. I'm not super happy about the text, more consideration could have gone into how the text and the red behind it could interlace into each other. I have provided some close up shots so you can see some detail and quality of the print.

VHS offset screen print

Image
Here are some shots of the screen prints of the VHS offset bunch I've included some close up shots, just to see the texture of the ink on the screen. Areas where the red and blue cross over make a really nice deep obsidian colour, the offset makes the image look like one of those 3D pictures that with glasses would jump off the page. It would even be interesting to see what kind of effect viewing this image with those glasses on would have. I like the image of the tape its very low tech and simple that when its reproduced like this it works well effectively
