Mock Up Circus poster sketches

Image
Inspired by carnival and circus type I have decided to create a mock advertisement poster for an old timey circus. I would like it to be mainly type with an image of a clown or two on the page. Below I have done a rough sketch for the typography Following on from this I sketched out some clowns, just quickly jotting down their form and pose with particular attention to the shape and position of the head. The most recognisable thing about clowns in my opinion are their wacky make up so conveying that in my poster is going to be very useful. I am also going to do some rough sketches for shapes that will fit along and decorate the page with pattern.

Typography book Research and Sketches

Image
After becoming more interested in the genre of typography following the last project, I have done a little bit of research with a few books. Free hand new typography by Thames & Hudson showcase many artists from around the world and interview them about how sketching and bookwork plays a role in their typographical development, but the book is also just a nice display of art. The second book Type & Typography by Phil Baines and Andrew Haslam delves deeper into aesthetics, technicalities and the beauty that type has in our lives. After flipping through the books it inspired me to crack open an unopened set of dip pens and splash some ink into my sketchbook. I fell in love with more of the ornate typography in the books, so I decided to experiment with some circus/carnival/western Type, predominantly inspired by the graphic designer Tom Lane.

Final and alternate poster designs for Door to Hell

Image
Using a black and orange colour palette is a creative strategy devised of using the two most opposite colours and contrasting them gives the effect of standing out the most to the readers viewpoint and attention. Which is more likely to get more people to notice something that is black and orange e.g. Traffic signs. I am quite pleased on how the font came out, if anything I think I enjoy the 'door to' letters more than 'hell' as they are more subtle and less overpowering than hell, also the little accents I placed upon each letter I think adorn the type nicely.  This alternative version was inspired by shadows dancing around a fire as it flickers, I researched a few videos of fire and noticed how light manipulates shadows when it comes from a single point. This alternative version just makes use of a the extra space and double layering of font colour, the red here is too bright for the picture really and should be a bit dull, more crimson like.  ...

Sketches and research for Turkmenistans Door to hell

Image
The Darvaza Gas crater is a natural gas field in Turkmenistan that was set on fire by geologist to prevent the spread of methane gas in 1971, the geologist thought that the reserve of gas their would run out in a few days. However the 30m deep crater is still burning rapidly to this day, giving this ever burning hole a very scary and hellish appearance. Locals have called the site the 'Door to hell', this is a great option for my next where location poster on places on not to visit. I started out with some rough sketches of what kind of font I could use here, I wanted to aim in more of a font orientated direction. I tried out a few firey typefaces for the word hell, playing about with the shape and two tones of the word, trying to emulate a burn effect. The second page is finding out what sort of font I should use for the less 'important' words. I wanted them to still be interesting but more passive in their manner of catching the readers attention. ...
