An investigation into effective poster design



This will be my starting research statement, I want to look into how intricate, complex posters convey information to the viewer? What semiotics do the images use that it expects the viewer to already pre-know? How do things like colour change the tone of an image and why it's so vital in things such as moods and settings? Looking at different genres of poster design such as minimalist film posters, music posters and advertisements I plan to analyse the subject in depth to better understand the process of constructing a visually striking image that contains a purpose of showing information
Analysing pre existing posters will help better understand what goes in to the process of designing a poster, also looking at bad poster design and why it's ineffective in its purpose of conveying a message and what the designers could've done to better produce a more catching image. A look into the origins of posters and how they came about would also prove useful to see how they have evolved and adapted into what they are today.

Mock Up Circus poster sketches

Inspired by carnival and circus type I have decided to create a mock advertisement poster for an old timey circus. I would like it to be mainly type with an image of a clown or two on the page. Below I have done a rough sketch for the typography Following on from this I sketched out some clowns, just quickly jotting down their form and pose with particular attention to the shape and position of the head. The most recognisable thing about clowns in my opinion are their wacky make up so conveying that in my poster is going to be very useful. I am also going to do some rough sketches for shapes that will fit along and decorate the page with pattern.

Final and alternate poster designs for Door to Hell

Using a black and orange colour palette is a creative strategy devised of using the two most opposite colours and contrasting them gives the effect of standing out the most to the readers viewpoint and attention. Which is more likely to get more people to notice something that is black and orange e.g. Traffic signs. I am quite pleased on how the font came out, if anything I think I enjoy the 'door to' letters more than 'hell' as they are more subtle and less overpowering than hell, also the little accents I placed upon each letter I think adorn the type nicely.  This alternative version was inspired by shadows dancing around a fire as it flickers, I researched a few videos of fire and noticed how light manipulates shadows when it comes from a single point. This alternative version just makes use of a the extra space and double layering of font colour, the red here is too bright for the picture really and should be a bit dull, more crimson like.  ...
